About the 1921 Census

After being locked away for a hundred years, the 1921 Census was released exclusively online at Findmypast on 6 January 2022, in partnership with The National Archives and the Office for National Statistics. Three years of intensive digitisation and conservation work was undertaken to bring these precious records of the past online for the very first time, painting a picture of life in 1921, after the horrors of the First World War and the Spanish Flu Pandemic.

The 1921 Census offers researchers around the world an opportunity to explore the movement, activities and occupations of English-speaking communities worldwide. The 1921 Census provides much more detail than any other census as it asked individuals not only about their age, birthplace, occupation and residence, but also for their place of work, employer details, and gave 'divorced' as an option for marital status. The 1921 Census reveals the rapid social and cultural change the country was undergoing, with the changing role of women and the impact of World War 1 proving particularly apparent.
